Shop Steward Kari Saari is a Voice for Employees at Mapromec
Since 2008, shop steward Kari Saari has worked at Mapromec as an inspector. He represents the Industrial Union, Finland’s largest trade union, and serves as a key link between the company and its employees.
"My role is to act as a bridge between staff and management. In certain situations, I am the voice of Mapromec’s employees, bringing their perspective to the table. I also support employees in any disputes that may arise with the employer. I listen, negotiate, and, when possible, offer my insights on the matter at hand. In the bigger picture, my job is to listen. That said, I’m happy to report that disputes here are extremely rare", Saari explains.
One of Mapromec’s current top priorities is paying close attention to employee feedback, making Saari’s role particularly important. Managing Director Tapio Kaunismäki works closely with him to ensure employee voices are heard.
"We hold regular meetings to discuss key topics. In our last meeting, we reviewed the recent changes to our salary system. The company also actively collects direct feedback through employee satisfaction surveys, which provide another valuable channel for employees to share their thoughts", Saari says.
Advancing Employee Well-Being
Since becoming shop steward in 2010, Saari has seen Mapromec make great strides in employee well-being, particularly in recent years. One example is the regular staff briefings introduced by the company. Improved information-sharing and greater inclusion in company affairs have helped increase employee engagement and satisfaction.
"The company has come a long way. For me – and I know I speak for many others – the most significant change has been the increase in communication and transparency. It has truly made a difference", Saari emphasizes.
Saari also highlights other key improvements, such as a stronger focus on workplace safety, upgraded facilities and renovated workspaces, and more opportunities for team bonding outside of work. Mapromec organizes annual team-building days and Christmas celebrations, provides Smartum benefits, life insurance, comprehensive occupational healthcare, and offers flexibility in working hours. The company has also enhanced working conditions through facility upgrades and machine investments. Work safety is actively promoted through a near-miss reporting system, regular safety inspections, and occupational safety committee meetings.
A Positive Workplace Atmosphere
After a long career at Mapromec, Saari appreciates the company’s work culture and commitment to employee well-being.
"Overall, our workplace is well-regarded among the staff. The atmosphere is positive – we are trusted and given both freedom and responsibility in our work. That’s one of the reasons I have stayed with the company for so long. Employees appreciate the steps taken to improve job satisfaction", Saari concludes.
